As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, I love to see books that educate children on the many benefits of breastfeeding and breast milk. So, when I saw Mama Feeds Me All The Colors: A Book of Breastfeeding in the library, I jumped for joy! The colorful illustrations and the woman of color breastfeeding on the cover of the book caught my attention. I made sure we checked out this book, but before we could get home, my middle son had chewed up the front of the book. Luckily, the library allowed us to keep the book (free of charge) since my son damaged the book.
Once we were able to read Mama Feeds Me All The Colors, we were able to see that it does a wonderful job celebrating the gift of breastfeeding. As it also teaches children about fruits, vegetables and colors. With beautiful illustrations by Nathalie Beauvoir, this book highlights one of the many benefits of breastfeeding - that babies are able to taste what their mother eats through their breast milk. It is also said that breastfed babies are less likely to be picky eaters later in life due to being exposed to many flavors in their mother's breast milk. I guess this didn't apply to my oldest son, who was breastfeed for three years. He can be extremely picky with what he chooses to eat.
In addition, the last page of the book serve as an encouragement and a resource page for expectant parents and breastfeeding mothers. I think this was an excellent idea to include in the book. Everyone's breastfeeding journey is different and you can have different experiences with each baby. I've learned over the years within my own experience and the women I've supported in their breastfeeding journey, is that support and encouragement make a HUGE difference.
